Small input, large effect
A checksum digit carries almost no information, yet it can invalidate an entire number. This is the kind of mechanism I find difficult to stop thinking about.
The lesson travels. Good systems do not always need more supervision or complexity. Sometimes a carefully placed constraint changes the economics of error.
